"Lemon Parade" turns 30 on Thursday (released July 16, 1996). I spent some time over the weekend re-listening to Tonic's debut album and it totally sent me back to that time. That era was quite a heyday for me. I was living in NYC and was a DJ at 92.3 K-Rock following the one and only Howard Stern. I got to hang with the band when this record came out.
Listening to these songs made me surprisingly a little emo. I was singing along to this album that I had listened to A LOT back then. As each song went by, I literally had some tears in my eyes. I wasn't even sure why. I wasn't sad, but this record is emotional and made me feel so melancholy as I was lamenting of a time gone by.
When the record wraps up with "My Old Man," I was sent into a rabbit hole thinking about the complexities of parent-child relationships. My relations with my parents were pretty good, but, man, I've seen a ton of turmoil with others. My issues with my Dad was that I didn't get enough time with him. He died about two years before this record came out.
I love how music marks a time in your life. Helps you get through things, good or bad. And the minute you put that song from your past on or catch it on the radio - you are sent right back in time to that exact moment. Like clockwork.
That's why I love what I do. So, grab some tissues (lol) and join me this week as we re-live this beautiful record.
It's a RETRO ALBUM DIVE - weekdays just after 12-Noon - on the SoCal Sound and the free SoCal Sound App.
Until then, my pretties...
